The Bardsey Island Trust

by Mark Valentine

Bardsey Island, off the tip of the Lyn peninsula, Gwynedd, Wales is run as a farm and nature reserve by an independent trust. It has a notable bird observatory and the ruins of a thirteenth century Austin abbey. The island’s sacred reputation predates this, however, and there is also St Mary’s Well, thought to have been used for christenings. On the headland opposite is another St Mary’s Well, below sea water at high tide. Both were the subject of pilgrimages.
